Paolozzi, Eduardo

Paolozzi, Eduardo
   b. 1924
   Sculptor
Eduardo Paolozzi influenced the development of pop art in Britain during the mid-1950s with his collages made of juxtaposed images taken from magazines and advertisements, which were inspired by dada and surrealism. As a sculptor, he was commissioned to produce a fountain for the Festival of Britain in 1951. During the 1960s he created large, robot-like, bronze figures whose surfaces were covered in casts taken from mechanical gadgetry. Among his public commissions are the mosaic decorations for the Tottenham Court Underground Station, London, the installation of which was completed in 1985, and the twelve-foot-high bronze sculpture inspired by William Blake’s image of Isaac Newton, situated in the piazza of the new British Library which opened in 1998.
